This bibliography builds on the material contained in Corn’s Bibliotheca Lincolniensis, published in 1904, since which time the main contributions to the bibliographic coverage of the city have been commercial auction and booksellers’ lists, the Lincolnshire section of the regional lists produced by the Library Association, and the East Midlands Bibliography. It is limited to the city itself, and the Cathedral has been largely excluded, except where material relates to both the city and the Church. The bibliography is based on the collections of Lincoln Central Library, though numerous other sources have been consulted, and includes items from the Local Studies Collection such as broadsheets, postcards, scrapbooks and manuscript items.
The bibliography of the city of Lincoln has been commissioned by the Francis Hill Memorial Trust as a tribute to the work of the late Sir Francis Hill, historian of Lincoln, local solicitor, chairman of the council and later chancellor of the university of Nottingham. He was for many years treasurer of the Lincoln Record Society., and the Society is delighted to be able to publish this as a tribute to him.
