Stow church in Lincolnshire is one of the major surviving Anglo-Saxon churches in the country, and this volume of documents concerned with its restoration in the mid nineteenth century is of great interest to architectural historian and archaeologists as well as social historians. The records printed by Mr Spurrell not only contain much evidence as to what was done at the time of restoration: they also unfold a fascinating picture of the battle between the perpetual curate, the Rev. George Atkinson, and the local farmers, who wished to prevent any changes whatsoever. Further interest is added by the presence of John Loughborugh Pearson, later to be famous as the architect of Truro Cathedral, as the architect in charge of the restoration.
